* I originally followed the career path of a Fitter and Turner, but could no longer fight the strong family ties to Optics.

* After completing Optical Mechanics and obtaining the credentials and license for Optical Dispensing, I began the new career at our family practice in Orange. Here I progressed through the workforce to eventually manage the Glass grind laboratory, right up until Plastic lenses became the norm.

* I worked in the family practice for 25 years, and then felt I needed to spread my wings. This meant doing Locum work throughout NSW and VIC, travelling with my wife, Tracy, in a caravan as our accommodation. We got to stay at many wonderful places.

* Locum work allows me to work in varied demographics (rural to city), meet the many different personalities involved in optics and work with the many types of machinery (I knew Fitting and Turning wasn’t a waste).

Dispensers Board warns about unlicensed dispensing

The New South Wales Optical Dispensers Licensing Board has warned that it will continue to enforce the requirements of the Optical Dispensers Act until it’s repealed in time for deregulation of dispensing in NSW, due to take place next July.

At present a substantial majority of dispensers have not renewed their licences, meaning they could be prosecuted if they d not do so by the end of this month and continue to dispense.

Computer Users Need Eyes Tested

If you spend a large part of your life in front of a computer screen, then you are in danger of a condition known as Computer Eye Fatigue. This is the warning from the Optometrists Association of Australia (OAA) and the organisation warns that office workers are particularly at risk of suffering from deteriorating eye health and vision problems caused by prolonged computer use.

In fact, some studies indicate that as many as 48 percent of office workers suffer from the disorder, which causes vision problems and deterioration of eye health. Symptoms include sore, red eyes associated with computer use, headaches that become more severe when staring at a computer screen, and blurred distance vision after work.

The OAA recommends that workers who spend a large amount of time focusing on a computer screen take regular two-minute breaks away from their desks, ideally every hour.It also recommends that everybody, particularly office workers, should have an eye exam every two years.
