This course prepares you to work as an optical dispenser. You will acquire the technical skills you need to select and fit lenses from prescription and become a licensed optical dispenser.

You learn about basic light theory, lenses and frames, anatomy and physiology of the eye. You will also learn about the practical aspects of dealing with clients, assessing their optical needs and selecting the most appropriate appliance, and managing an optical dispensing practice.

To operate as an Optical Dispenser in NSW the requirements of the Optical Dispensing Licensing Board in accordance with the Optical Dispensers Licensing Act 1963, must be met. Those requirements can be satisfied by completing this course, plus gaining additional practical on-the-job experience as set out in the NSW Optical Licensing Board Log Book.

Articulation

Learners who successfully complete this program are able to articulate with and receive credits for relevant units of competency from other qualifications in the Health Training Package (HLT07). When you finish this course you may also apply for credit in HLT43707 Certificate IV in Optical Technology (18279).

This course prepares you to work as an optical mechanic. You will learn how to make various types of lenses according to prescription and the appropriate standard specifications. You also learn about the needs of your clients for the quality optical and cosmetic aids you will make.

Qualification: Diploma Delivered by: Open Training Education Network (OTEN) Diploma Units of Competency:Ophthalmic Practice Management – 60hrs.TAFE Certificate IV Graduates in Optical Dispensing may apply for an exemption from this unit. Evaluate marketing opportunities – 40hrs. Develop operating and capital budgets – 45hrs. Managing quality customer service – 40hrs. Managing effective workplace relationships – 40hrs. Manage recruitment and selection -onto a 100hrs. Managing internal marketing – 40hrs or Manage risk – 40 hrs.

As a qualified optical dispenser with this Diploma you will gain:
